Bejiita no Ouji as you may have already guessed is my favorite character in all of Dragon Ball Z and GT. This may come as a shock, but at first I didn't like him at all. I found him and his whole arrogant persona trivial and annoying. But as I watched more of the series he began to grow on me.
It wasn't until the later half of the Furiiza saga that I realized his greatness and truly fell in love with his character. He not quite what he seems at first glance. He comes off very full of himself, but I realized his arrogance was fueled by the tremendous pride and honor he felt for his race and linage. That's just a scratch at the surface. When you dig a little deeper, you'd see that Bejiita is one of the most complex characters in the series. Unlike the rest of the DBZ cast, we don't always know exactly why he does or says what he does. He seems so much more natural and real to me. Bejiita is not a "goody goody" for one. He has vices and virtues like everyone else. He learns, and changes, and grows after his experiences and mistakes and still looks good doing it. He's like the bad guy among the good guys.
I also find his ambition, tenacity, and drive to excel quite admirable; though he does have a habit of going a little overboard at times. There are so many people who simply settle for mediocrity because trying harder is too difficult. He would never do something like that.
His complexity also comes out in his relationships with those around him. He and his family for example have a strange, silent bond and understanding of one another. Bejiita is often seen as being very callous towards Buruuma, Torankusu, and Bura. But slowly over time he warms up to them all; his daughter Bura especially. He's never very vocal about his affections, but makes them known in his own subtle way. The is the same goes for Gokuu and the other Z fighters. His view and feelings toward all of them change as he changes over time, making Bejiita one of the most dynamic characters in the series.
Saiyajin no Ouji is, though some may disagree, a very vital character. He's one of the few Z-fighters who does not become obsolete even as the series draws to a close. The plot and entire outcome of many conflicts in the show would have been very different and in my opinion not as interesting without his presence.
Last but certainly not least, he's cute. I usually don't go for shorter men but for him I'll make an exception. NO ONE can pull off spandex or red fur quite like him. NO ONE can pull of the "insanity smirk" TM like Bejiita. I think it may be one of his best features.
He's the smirk, the spandex, the attitude, and the power wrapped up into one five foot three package!
Bejiita ai shiteru
I hope this short essay will make you look at Bejiita with new eyes from now on.
